Linux or Windows Web Hosting?

December 19, 2009 by Dave

Choosing the right web hosting, that provides the best environment for your website is essential to ensure your success online. Choosing the right web hosting provider will guarantee that your site will be provided to your visitors with minimal downtime, and also ensure that your site will load up faster. You will also have to make sure that they provide the software that supports the technology your site was built with. You’ll have two choices for this, Linux hosting or Windows hosting.
There is a lot for you to consider when choosing the correct web hosting for your web site, but hopefully this post will clear up some of that confusion for you. Linux is the most common type of web hosting out there, and is a great choice if you plan to run a lot of advanced scripting. Linux is very flexible, usually cheaper than windows hosting and is also very secure. Some of the different scripting languages you will be able to use on Linux include databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, and mSQL, along with pearl, Ruby, and many others. Linux also allows you to use cPanel (windows can have this also) which is very easy and user friendly, allowing you to edit your webpage with ease. Another bonus you will get from Linux is that it’s a very stable operating system, meaning that it doesn’t crash frequently which equals maximum uptime for your website!
If your website will however need to use a lot of Microsoft products you will probably be better off using windows web hosting. Although you have the ability to use frontpage extensions to provide some in Linux hosting environments. However for most of the more complex programs you will be better off using windows hosting, something else to consider is weather you will have to integrate chat into your site, if so selecting a windows based server would be a wise choice.
So there you have it a few different hosting options, and some of the functions and features both of them provide. If you have farther questions you may want to try our forums, or consulting your software engineer for assistance, but I hope this post cleared up at least some of your confusion. Most of the hosting providers in our top 10 list provide both types of web hosting for your convenience.
